The SCYA Commodore’s Cruise has roots going back to the 1930s where the early Member Clubs of SCYA would gather at Catalina Island to share stories, tell jokes and brag of their accomplishments, even if they might be considered “tall tales.”
In 1974 the Commodore of the Catalina Island Yacht Club spent the Opening Day season visiting various yacht clubs in Southern California and enjoyed the hospitality that was demonstrated to him. As a result, he asked the standing Commodores of the SCYA Member Clubs to attend at Catalina Island Yacht Club in Avalon for three days in October to enjoy a weekend of comradery. The activities included the annual miniature golf tournament and of course, enjoyment of the company of fellow Commodores.
The SCYA Commodores’ Cruise has been held at CIYC more than 40 times over its 50 year history. For 2026, the SCYA Commodores’ Cruise will be held once again in the historical Catalina Island Yacht Club. SCYA Commodore Jodi Masters-Gonzales is inviting all current, past, and future Commodores of SCYA member clubs—and their guests—to attend this exciting weekend!

Skippers entering the Commodores Cup should purchase the appropriate weekend ticket below and select “Yes” for Commodores Cup Regatta Entry during registration. The regatta entry fee is included in the ticket price.
Participants can also select the weekend activities they would like to attend, including Friday happy hour, mini golf, Saturday dinner, and the Commodores Cup awards presentation.
2026 CIYC Commodores Cup Regatta—SCYA and CIYC have teamed up with Long Beach Yacht Club to expand our annual tradition by bringing back the Commodores Cup—after 40 years in retirement. Originally presented by CIYC Commodore R. Shayer in 1935, this regatta ran annually through 1985 from, “a point off the mainland finishing off Catalina.” CIYC Vice Commodore Larry Gottleib has decided to bring this regatta out of retirement with the help of LBYC Commodore Bob Piercy and his incredible race committee.
Regatta entry fee: included in ticket price. All crew are invited to happy hour Friday at CIYC without purchasing separate ticket. Commodores Cup Regatta trophies will be presented during Saturday dinner @ CIYC (ticket required.) See Notice of Race below. Sailing Instructions will be posted and distributed to registered racers. After ticketing, skippers will be sent a form to collect boat and crew info.
