On June 11th, Silver Gate Yacht Club in San Diego will host the 57th edition of a wonderful tradition – our Wheel Chair Regatta. During the event, volunteers take some of our physically and/or mentally challenged citizens for a tour of the beautiful San Diego Bay. This outing on the water is an experience most of our guests never have the chance to enjoy. For many who have returned year after year, it is a time they look forward to experience again. The smiles and joy of the boat ride are fulfilling to those of us that volunteer whether it be as a dock hand, in food preparation, communication or overall coordination. Hosting over 400 guests requires a major effort from everyone at Silver Gate YC as well as many other yacht clubs in the San Diego area.
To show how much of a program it is, we actually call on the Marines from Mira Mar Air Station to assist loading our guests safely onto the boats for their bay cruise. These young men and women look forward to this duty and many have done so a number of years.
Donations of food, drinks and service items offset the costs and fuel discounts partially ease the fuel costs for the skippers. All-in-all the Wheel Chair Regatta is a rewarding event for our guests as well as for the many volunteers who are critical to such a long-lived event,
