With many of the clubs facing restrictions and for the safety of the sailors many of the formal regattas in the region have been cancelled or postponed. This has caused an increase in demand among racers to participate in the sailing competitions that remain. South Shore Yacht Club was the beneficiary of this demand over the weekend of July 18 and 19 as sailors converged for the 11:00 am start just outside of Newport Harbor. 37 boats came from Oceanside to Marina del Rey and all points in between to take part.
Social distancing was possible as each boat was limited to only 2 crew members as they made there way around the 90 mile course around Catalina or the shorter 63 mile around ship rock course.
Competition was intense as 7 boats finished the around Catalina course in corrected times of under 15 hours with no boar taking longer than 26 hours. The ship rock course proved to be equally quick with all but one boat finishing under 11 hours corrected time. For full results and more information please see the SSYC website by clicking HERE
