This regatta just started in 1969 with 51 boats in attendance. It takes place the second Sunday of October every year in the Gulf of Trieste part of the Adriatic Sea. Year after year the Barcolana has become more and more popular attracting international crews and world-famous sailors. In 2018 the regatta set a record with 2689 boats on the starting line. Over 25,000 sailors sailed the 15 mile four-sided, fixed mark course. More than 250,000 spectators watch the Barcolana from the Trieste seafront.

The 91st annual SCYA Midwinter Regatta has been one of the largest regattas held in the United States for many years, drawing over 600 entries year after year. The 2020 SCYA Midwinter Regatta will be held at varies venues around southern California the weekend of February 8th & 9th and 15th & 16th.
